Irving Berlin wrote this anthem. He was a refugee from Russia, his parents fled in the 1890ies from Russian pogroms to the USA. They believed in the message:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Today the USA celebrates Independence Day. On July 4th 1776 the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, which was mostly written by Thomas Jefferson. A historic day in the history of modern times and an important milestone in the development of freedom and democracy.
